"Alexander King's Treatise on Maritime Law"

Professor John Ford from the University of Aberdeen will speak on "Alexander King’s Treatise on Maritime Law", as part of the Law School's research seminar series 2013-14.

The Law School research seminar series aims to foster and sustain the School’s excellent research environment. It provides an opportunity for staff from the Law School and other Schools and from lawyers of other Universities, to share, engage with, and build upon a research piece, whether at an advanced or final stage of development. Seminars usually last for approximately one hour, including a 30-40 minutes presentation followed by a 30-40 minutes discussion. Staff and students are welcome and there is no need to register.

“It has often been suggested that the maritime law of Scotland was in a relatively advanced state of development at the end of the sixteenth century. The suggestion is based on the existence of a surprisingly large number of treatises about maritime law written by Scottish authors. In reality, however, lawyers and historians only ever look at one or two of these books. The aim of the seminar will be to consider why one of the others, a treatise written by the advocate and admiral depute Alexander King, has been neglected, what steps may be taken to overcome the perceived obstacles to its use, and whether these steps are worth taking.”
