Professor Waelde presents the first research seminar of the series 2013-14

Speaking on "Disability: Access to and Engagement in the Arts. What Can Law Do?", Professor Charlotte Waelde of the University of Exeter will host the first in the series of research seminars for 2013-14 at the Law School, University of Aberdeen.

Professor Charlotte Waelde is a leading intellectual property scholar. She is the Chair of the Intellectual Property Office Expert Advisory Group for Copyright. Her joint talk at Aberdeen on 4 October at 1pm with Dr Abbe Brown (University of Aberdeen) will explore their ongoing research on the intersection between copyright, human rights and disability, and which seeks to deliver both scholarly and practical outputs. Their talk will focus on the impact (or lack of it) of the present legal regimes for those wishing to enjoy and participate in the arts.  Particular reference will be made to  the ongoing project funded by the AHRC 'InVisible Difference: Dance, Disability and Law' on which the speakers are Co-Investigators and to the impact for users of the arts of the 'Miracle at Marrakesh' – the successful negotiation of the international Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled. This talk will be of interest to those researching, teaching,  learning and practising in intellectual property, human rights, disability studies and all aspects of the arts, and also to all those with a broad interest in one of these fields.

The Law School research seminar series aims to foster and sustain the School’s excellent research environment. It provides an opportunity for staff from the Law School and other Schools and from lawyers of other Universities, to share, engage with, and build upon a research piece, whether at an advanced or final stage of development. Seminars usually last for approximately one hour, including a 30-40 minutes presentation followed by a 30-40 minutes discussion. Staff and students are welcome and there is no need to register.
