In light of the Scottish position regarding Brexit on the one hand and the Catalonian independence movement on the other, new light is shed on the question as to how parts of a country may legally react to developments at the central level that they (by a majority) disagree with. Against this background, the talk will focus on the question to what extent the right to self-determination may provide a suitable remedy under international (and constitutional) law.
Biography:
Dirk Hanschel is currently a professor of German, European and International Public Law at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. Prior to that he was a Reader at the University of Aberdeen law school. His research focuses inter alia on questions of comparative constitutional and international law, including issues of autonomy, secession and self-determination.
