On 12 November, Justin gave the keynote address at an 'Expert talk on Anti-SLAPP solutions' at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event, which was a follow-up from a workshop held in Aberdeen in March, was hosted by members of 3 political groupings at the European Parliament, and organised by 15 press freedom NGOs.
The European People's Party reports: “MEP David Casa, together with other MEPs, reiterated his commitment to finding EU solutions to address the harassment of journalists through these abusive practices.
Casa welcomed the legal expert analyses, presented by Dr Justin Borg-Barthet, that set out concrete measures that can be taken to address SLAPP practices including amending EU laws that deal with the choice of jurisdiction and the applicable law in defamation cases.
“We now have a concrete foundation on which we can base our work”, stated MEP David Casa.”
Justin presented advice on legislative solutions to reform EU defamation law. The advice is based on the following Working Paper: ‘The Brussels I Regulation as an Instrument for the Undermining of Press Freedoms and the Rule of Law: an Urgent Call for Reform'.
