On the 28th May 2019, the Law School hosted a workshop faciltated by two leading international trade experts, focusing on the issues around trade wars and trade negotaitions. The workshop was attended by current Law School students, many of whom were undertaking the Professional Skills Summer School on International Trade Negotiation. Mr Luis González García (Matrix Chambers, London) kicked off the morning session, exploring the trade landscape including the US-China Trade War, Trump’s trade policy and the challenges facing policy makers.
The afternoon session was facilitated and led by Ambassador Roberto Zapata, Permanent Representative of Mexico to the World Trade Organisation (WTO, Geneva). Ambassador Zapata focused on the negotiation of the trade agreement in the Asia-Pacific region (the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership “CPTPP”) for which he had been the Chief Negotiator. He also explained how multilateral and plurilateral negotiations are conducted in the WTO, and concluded the day's workshop with an overview of the current reforms of the WTO.
