Tailored for the audience who are interested in Gen AI in general, this presentation aims to delve into the structural impact of Gen AI on the infrastructure of the digital era and scrutinize Gen AI players’ business strategy and profitability. On the former issue, foundation models are assumed as INTELLIGENCE infrastructure that would centralize the production of intelligence for various downstream industries. Several interesting implications based on this assumption will be discussed. On the latter, while Gen AI news dominates headlines, a hard fact is that most Gen AI players are struggling to profit. The barrier to creating and capturing value from Gen AI will be discussed from the lens of firm strategy and business model. Taken together, the talk will present a nuanced picture of Gen AI, highlighting its far-reaching future impact, on one hand, and the sobering business realities, on the other.
Dr Hong Hou is an Assistant Professor at the National School of Development, Peking University. His areas of research span the fields of strategy, ecosystem and business model innovation, and digitalization. He received PhD degree from the University of Cambridge. His research work has been published at leading journals such as Long Range Planning, Technovation, Management and Organization Research, and Organizational Dynamics. Before pursuing a PhD, he worked as a strategy consultant for about 10 years. The deep-rooted industrial experiences allow him to well integrate his academic knowledge to industrial practices, enrich his research as well as teaching to students at different levels
