Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the global health care challenges of the 21st century. The University of Aberdeen has a 100-year history of ground-breaking science in nutrition and health, principally led by researchers within the Rowett Institute (RI). The primary cause of obesity is the consumption of more food than the body requires, calories that are then stored as fat. An understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms regulating physical activity, energy expenditure and food intake is essential to successful prevention and treatment of obesity and associated conditions. The brain represents the master coordinator of voluntary physical activity and appetite, employing a number of interwoven neurological circuits to continually appraise and respond to changes in energy balance. This position pioneers the discovery of key neurons modulating physical activity with ageing.

Research Fellow, Biological Sciences
The Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre (SFIRC), within the School of Biological Sciences, undertakes fundamental and applied research to enhance current knowledge of fish physiology. We focus on immunology, new or improved therapeutic approaches to combat fish disease, and nutrition research to improve fish health and welfare. Working closely with the aquaculture industry, a key area of our focus is on the molecular and functional underpinnings of immune modulation in Atlantic salmon, particularly during the parr-smolt transformation. To better understand how light throughout production influences fish performance, the advertised position will investigate how photoperiodic entrainment influences the immune response and disease resilience of farmed Atlantic salmon. The work will involve fish trials using state-of-the-art aquarium facilities within the school and functional genomic approaches, including use of a recently established high throughput immune gene expression profiling (fluidigm) platform.
