Phishing Campaign affecting University

What is happening?

There has been a sustained phishing campaign affecting the University over the course of yesterday and today.

We have seen large volumes of email from compromised external accounts (Hotmail.com, outlook.com, and me.com).

The messages comprise a vague subject line, designed to intrigue the recipient, followed by a Bitly link (bit.ly/example). Bitly is a legitimate service used to generate short web links, but in this case it is being used to hide links to malicious websites.

The sender address may be familiar to you if a Contact’s mailbox has been compromised.

The majority of messages are rejected by our mail filters and are being junked and deleted. However, because subjects, sender addresses and links are unique for each recipient, some messages may still make it to your inbox.

What should you do?

If you receive such an email, do not click any links or reply to the message. Instead, please report it to us by forwarding it to spam@abdn.ac.uk.

If you suspect you have clicked a fraudulent link, please contact the Service Desk immediately.
