NHS Grampian Consultant Ophthalmologist Lucia Kuffova takes on race to raise funds for Saving Sight in Grampian
Starting on 15 October I’ll be tackling one of the biggest challenges of the natural
world, and my biggest ever personal challenge, as I spend at least 3 weeks at sea on the Clipper
Round the World Yacht Race to raise money for Saving Sight in Grampian (University of Aberdeen
Development Trust) and Unicef UK. I have only recently started sailing dinghies but fallen in love
with sailing. This race is an endurance test like no other, as I join a crew of all ages and
experience in a record- breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean
racing yacht.
I’ll be part of ‘Team Guy’ or ‘Dare to Lead’ team on the second leg of the Clipper Round the World
journey, travelling 4200 miles (7000km) from Punta del Este, Uruguay to Cape Town, South Africa.
For me, this is the conclusion of more than two years’ planning, intensive training and preparation
for this race. I’ve always dreamed of crossing the ocean, experiencing yacht racing and adverse
weather conditions and I’m nervous, but also extremely excited, to have the opportunity to realise
this goal.
Our ‘Dare to Lead’ team is raising money for Unicef UK, the world’s leading charity working for
children in danger, and I am personally raising money for Saving Sight in Grampian, a local charity
which is supporting research into blinding eye conditions. I would be grateful for anything you
feel you can donate to this fantastic cause.
Thank you for your support. http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/LuciaKuffova
