Dr Stephen Bridgman

Biography

Dr Stephen Bridgman is a public health physician who has been  an  Honorary Senior Lecturer at the  University of Aberdeen since 2017. He joined the Epidemiology Group in 2023 as part of a collaborative joint appointment with Public Health Scotland and NHS Highland where he has  recently been appointed to provide public health advice, principally on musculoskeletal disease and injury.  He has held an Honorary senior lectureship at Keele University  where he set up and led a surgical trials and epidemiology unit as part of Keele's MSK research programme, was involved in practical Health Board commissioned research, and had an interest in education, having responsibility for Keele's undergraduate public health medicine curriculum.  Alongside his honorary academic positions, he has held Director of Public Health service positions in England, Guernsey and New Zealand, and  CMO in Guernsey. Varied service leadership responsibilities/experiences have included organisational strategy, research governance, Caldicott Guardian, health improvement programmes,  public health profiles and survey,  developing and taking public health strategies through a political assembly, developing public health legislation, and leading on pandemic responses  He has over 50 peer-reviewed publications, and around 100 publications from all categories. He trained in undergraduate  medicine in Aberdeen where he was awarded an MRC studentship in musculo-skeletal disease, before undertaking  his MD in Aberdeen while a junior doctor. He  trained in trauma surgery in Scotland, and then  public health medicine in Merseyside.

His current research interests are interventions to improve the MSK health of the Scottish public, and the reduction of the burden of injury in Scotland.
