Sophie recently joined the group after relocating from Shetland, and will be our new Administration Coordinator.
Tell us a bit about yourself
Originally from Kent, my partner and I made a break for freedom and spent 10 years living in Shetland, where I worked as an Administration Assistant at Anderson High School. Prior to this, I had worked in the third sector with the Catcuddles Sanctuary in London, and in a veterinary practice. I have a BA in Philosophy and Psychological Studies from The Open University, so I’m sure I will be over-analysing everything that happens here in the Epi group!
What will you be working on while you are in Aberdeen?
I am taking over the role as the group’s new Administration Coordinator. I have a lot of experience in providing administrative duties in a busy environment, and although working with a research group is a new scenario for me, I am confident that my background gives me the skills to handle any challenges that the group might throw my way.
Why did you choose Aberdeen?
Family and being ever so slightly closer to Gillingham FC (definitely in that order) tempted us back to the mainland after 10 years of island life. I recently moved to Aberdeen with my partner and we are discovering what an interesting city it is – there is a great cultural scene, lots of very good restaurants, and lots of history. Plus, there are a lot of trees – it’s been a while since I’ve been able to say that!
Are you involved in any other research?
This is my first time in an academic setting since leaving university, so I’m not currently involved in any other research projects. However, I am looking forward to learning more about the great research work the group does, and learning more about the science of epidemiology!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, walking, and reading – especially books that are far too long. We are keen sport watchers, and can often be found ground-hopping, so having new teams to visit is also very exciting.
