Professor Stephen Logan appointed new Chair of NHS Grampian

The Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport, Shona Robison, today announced that University of Aberdeen Senior Vice Principal, Professor Stephen Logan, is to be the new Chair of NHS Grampian.

Professor Logan will take up the post after he retires from his current role as Senior Vice-Principal of the University of Aberdeen at the end of January 2015.

Professor Logan has previously held the role of Chairman of Grampian University Hospital NHS Trust and was a board member of NHS Grampian.  He has served on the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council and Scottish Funding Council and is currently a board member of Aberdeen Sports Village and Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Futures (ACSEF).

Ms Robison welcomed the appointment and said she looked forward to working with Professor Logan.

She said: “I’m pleased to be able to appoint Professor Stephen Logan as Chair of NHS Grampian and I am confident he will bring a wealth of experience to this important role.

“With an extensive public sector background, as well as previous experience with NHS Grampian, I know he will be well placed to lead the board as they move forward.

“In addition, Professor Logan has worked in Aberdeen for many years and has a significant understanding of the unique challenges the city and its surrounding area face.

“Under this new leadership, the health board is now in a strong position to take forward the recommendations from the Healthcare Improvement Scotland report quickly and effectively.

“I look forward to working with Professor Logan, and the Scottish Government will continue to offer its full support to NHS Grampian and the new leadership.”

University of Aberdeen Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Ian Diamond, added: "I am delighted with the news this morning of the appointment of Professor Stephen Logan as the new Chair of NHS Grampian.

"Professor Logan has made an immense contribution to the life and work of the University throughout his career, both as an esteemed academic in neuroscience, as Dean and subsequently Provost of the College of Life Sciences and Medicine, and latterly as Senior Vice-Principal.

"With his invaluable experience and close links with NHS Grampian, he has played an important role in our close partnership in teaching and research in clinical and non-clinical medicine on the Foresterhill site and beyond, and Aberdeen is rated as the top medical school in Scotland and fifth in the UK.

"The University is indebted to Professor Logan for his dedication and commitment over his distinguished career, and I want to express my sincere thanks to him, to wish him every success in his new challenge, and look forward to our continuing and vital strategic alliance with our regional NHS."

Professor Stephen Logan said:"I am delighted and honoured to be asked to bring my skills and experience to this critical and challenging role. I view this opportunity as a great privilege to serve the people of the north-east, and to work with our outstanding teams of healthcare professionals and management to ensure that services across our region are of the quality that our communities deserve."
