The Institute of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Aberdeen Presents Honorary Appointment

The Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS) at the University of Aberdeen has taken a significant step in redefining the nature of research partnerships between members of the public and researchers by bestowing honorary titles upon members of its Health Services Research Unit (HSRU) Public Involvement Partnership (PIP) group. This decision is a response to a question many public contributors in research may ask themselves: "Can we consider ourselves true partners without formal recognition of our contributions?"

We think formal recognition is essential. By conferring honorary titles, the Institute is not just acknowledging the contributions of HSRU’s public research partners but is also taking strides towards establishing equality and respect in its partnership with public research contributors. Established in 2017, most of the honoured HSRU PIP group members have been part of the group for years, enriching health research with public perspectives and subsequently influencing the broader research community. New members joining the group are bringing with them a dedicated focus on representing marginalised communities. Their involvement is set to play a pivotal role in helping HSRU design research to tackle healthcare inequalities.

Both long-standing and new members are seen by HSRU as irreplaceable partners, integral to the unit's ongoing pursuit of excellence in health research. Therefore, we are delighted with the Institute’s decision.

Here are the reactions of some group members regarding the decision:

“The Institute’s decision sets an example for a more supportive, inclusive, and genuinely collaborative approach in health service research. It is not just a recognition but a resounding affirmation: In research, every voice matters, and public contributors are valued partners.” Dr Magda Rzewuska Díaz (HSRU’s PPI lead)

“This is fantastic news and many thanks, it is even more special to now be part of the team and I can show that off, by wearing my I'd with Pride.” Peter Flockhart

“I am delighted to be granted an Honorary Appointment by the IAHS at the University of Aberdeen. The HSRU (Health Services Research Unit) is internationally renowned for the important, transformational, excellent research it undertakes, and it is always a great privilege to assist in this. The Public Involvement Partnership Group volunteering at HSRU is exemplary-such a dedicated, tremendous team.” Mike Melvin
