The CSO funded PRACTICAL study has been completed. This study was a randomised trial comparing a nurse-led ICU follow-up programme versus standard care. The nurse-led programme showed no evidence of being effective or cost-effective in improving quality of life in the first year after intensive care discharge. Recommendations included further work on the roles of early physical rehabilitation, delirium, and the role of relatives. ICU follow-up clinics should review their practice in light of these results.
