Alison Avenell and Graeme MacLennan, from HSRU, have collaborative research links with Mark Bolland, Andrew Grey, Ian Reid and Greg Gamble from the Department of Medicine, University of Auckland. Areas of research interest include the effect of calcium and or/vitamin D on cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporotic fractures and mortality.
As collaborations go, this must be one of the longest distance at over 11,000 miles, so it is not at all often members of the two teams get to meet up!
We were very pleased to host Associate Professor Andrew Grey’s visit to Aberdeen between 19th–23rd October. Andrew also met with Fiona Stewart and Beatriz Goulao from HSRU. Andrew gave three completely different talks on bone-related topics, including what bisphosphonate regime to use for fracture prevention, and how conflicts of interest may lead to ineffective treatments continuing.
Andrew also had the opportunity to visit Cairngorm National Park, before heading back to London to celebrate the All Black’s famous victory in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
