We recently hosted our second Adrian Grant Memorial Lecture. Adrian was the HSRU Director from 1994 to 2007. During his 13 years’ tenure, the unit trebled in size, carrying out studies in areas such as incontinence, hernia repair, hip replacement and the role of vitamin D in the prevention of fractures. This year’s lecture was delivered by Professor Peter Brocklehurst, Professor of Women’s Health and Director of Research and Development for the Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) in the Institute of Applied Health Research. Peter trained as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist before moving into academia to train as a perinatal epidemiologist. He is a consultant in public health and his major research focus has been on randomised controlled trials in pregnancy and the newborn period. His talk focussed on when and how to stop a trial early in which he used examples from his career to share experiences on main issues and potential solutions.
The online nature of the talk allowed inclusion of a geographical spread of attendees and the speaker – who joined us from the South of France! You can watch Peter’s talk here - https://bit.ly/34n3CHw
