Having enjoyed studying business management and social studies at school, Roisin Fredrick decided that the University’s MA Business Management & Legal Studies degree provided the best opportunities for her career ambitions. With the generous support of a Cormack Family Foundation Scholarship, Roisin is now one step nearer to her goals as she graduates this week before moving to London. Here she tells us more about her time at Aberdeen and her future plans.
“I want to start by saying thank you to the Cormack family for supporting me over these past four years as I wouldn’t have accomplished half of what I have achieved without this scholarship.
“This year I undertook four courses, two in business management and two in law, one of which was my dissertation. I think my biggest achievement this year has been the completion of my dissertation as I took a gamble and picked relatively new laws to analyse – the Digital Service Act and the Online Safety Bill. This meant there were less journals and articles that I could access and use to develop my arguments. Despite this, I managed to get a B on my dissertation and enjoyed exploring digital law in more depth, in particular social media platforms.
“I also got involved in a few extracurricular activities this year. I was the ordinary officer for the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic Forum which meant that I was in charge of the social media page. I joined the new Aerial & Pole Society which was started by a friend and I have been going to lots of their classes and I’ve also been doing some poetry work, recently performing at Spin for a book launch. I also decided to create an Instagram/TikTok account dedicated to raising awareness of a health condition I have, hyperhidrosis.
“Looking ahead, another big achievement is that I have a job lined up after graduating and, from September, will be working as a tax assistant at Blick Rothenberg in London.
“Once again I would like to thank the Cormack family for their support during my studies and it was a pleasure to meet them at their scholarship event two years ago.
“Finally, to any students coming to study at Aberdeen, my biggest advice is to be open-minded and put yourself out there.”
