New Legacy Giving Officer Tells Us About Giving a Gift of Opportunity
2022-06-30

I have recently been appointed as the Development Officer for Legacy Gifts. Having worked at the University of Aberdeen Development Trust for the last three years with a great team, I am excited to have the opportunity to develop legacy giving for the University. I hope to increase awareness and break down the myths around leaving a gift in your will.

You may have already made provision in your will for the University - and that is fantastic - but if you haven’t, then here are some things to consider:

  • If you make provision in your will for the University, you will be giving a Gift of Opportunity to make a difference - to a student going through hardship, to globally important medical research, to help preserve and share our rich heritage or to provide an enriched student experience.
  • How easy is it to do? Really easy! You just need to insert the name and charity number in your will - the University of Aberdeen Development Trust, charity number SC002938
  • Can anyone leave a gift in their will? Yes! Every gift makes a difference no matter what the size. Anyone can pledge to leave 1% in their will - this means those closest to you will be looked after and that 1% can be a Gift of Opportunity that will make the difference. It costs you nothing in your lifetime but has an impact on the future.

Did you know that research shows that those who have left a gift in their will to charity live longer? It is the joy of giving that you get from helping others - it lowers your blood pressure and increases your self-esteem, bringing you greater happiness and satisfaction.

If you would like to know more about leaving a gift in your will then please do get in touch with me, Vanessa Holmes, by email at vanessa.holmes@abdn.ac.uk or by phone on +44 (0) 1224 274132 at the University of Aberdeen Development Trust.
