Throughout the year, the generosity of our dedicated community fundraisers has continued to provide tremendous support for world-class research and facilities at the University.
A number of supporters organised events to raise funds for breast cancer research at Aberdeen. In October 2023, surgeon Beatrix Elsberger and colleagues at ARI organised a ceilidh, raising almost £8,000 and pupils at St Margaret’s School for Girls smashed their target of £500 and raised £826 by organising a week of activities including a 1,000km movement challenge, a cheekily appropriately themed biscuit sale and an awareness-raising assembly. Finally, Jen Mills and her friends Jennifer, Meg and Mary organised a fashion show at the Newmachar Axis Centre in April 2024 and raised £1,400.
Fifty-two fundraisers took the time to train for and participate in the Loch Ness Marathon, Run Balmoral, Kiltwalk and the Women’s 10K in the past year and collectively raised £9,000 which is already making a real difference to our vital research into gastro-oesophageal cancer and women’s health.
In January 2024, Peter & Avril Gray gave a generous donation to support dementia research at the University. The couple raised £74,500 in memory of Peter’s mum who lived with dementia until her death in 2020 and they decided to split the funds between the University’s dementia research and the Forget-Me-Not Club in Banchory. Aberdeen has a strong track-record of research into brain health and neurodegenerative conditions including dementia.
