Students from the exploHUB and the Integrated Petroleum Geoscience MSc courses were given a subsurface tour at BP last week.
BP’s HIVE facility was used to introduce students to the Foinaven Field which is situated West of Shetlands. The tour was the culmination of the Operations Geology Short Course which provides a week long introduction to the drilling of wells. The course is co-taught by Christine Telford (a practicing operations geologist) and Stuart Archer and has been generously sponsored for a six year period by GDFSuez. The course includes a realistic simulation of drilling activities where the students are “on-call” for a 12 hour period, offering them valuable experience of a key aspect of the oil industry.
