A leading geophysicist from the University of Aberdeen has received a prestigious award in recognition of his contribution to the field of geophysics.
Dr Iraklis Giannakis, from the University’s School of Geosciences, has been announced as the Bullerwell Lecturer for 2024, by the British Geophysical Association (BGA).
The Bullerwell Lecture is an annual award that is given to an individual for a significant contribution to the field of geophysics, with the recipient providing a series of lectures at different universities*
The main focus of Dr Giannakis’s research is using innovative artificial intelligence concepts, signal processing and inversion to solve problems in applied geophysics and non-destructive testing. His research extends across a wide range of disciplines and has focused on topics such as planetary science, landmine detection and civil/environmental engineering.
Commenting on the award, Dr Giannakis said: “I am truly honoured to have been announced as the Bullerwell Lecturer for 2024 by the British Geophysical Association. It's a privilege to be recognized for my contributions to the field of geophysics, and I am deeply grateful to the BGA for this prestigious award.
“Geophysics is a field that allows us to better understand our planet and the solar system. I am passionate about the work we do at the University of Aberdeen's School of Geosciences, advancing our knowledge on our planet and solar system and addressing critical challenges such as environmental issues, resource exploration and net-zero energy transition.
“I look forward to delivering the Bullerwell Lecture series in 2024 and sharing insights and discoveries from the world of geophysics. It's an opportunity to inspire the next generation of geoscientists and engage with the broader scientific community.”
