We proudly announce that Geography & Environment has secured two competitive PhD studentships out of the pool of 12 studentships to be funded by the Aberdeen-Curtin Alliance. The successful applicants have been Dr Piotr Niewiadomski (jointly with Dr Tod Jones from Curtin) and Dr Lorna Philip (jointly with Dr Amanda Davies from Curtin). While the project supervised by Drs Niewiadomski and Jones will investigate green economy transitions in tourism in the Margaret River region in Western Australia, Drs Philip and Davies’ project will focus on the implications of renewable energy for sustainable rural development. Both studentships have been secured under the ‘Energy’ theme (one of the four main themes on which the Aberdeen-Curtin Alliance rests), with a specific focus on the ‘Sustainable Development’ topic.
This success is an important outcome of the friendly and exciting collaboration between the Geography departments at Aberdeen and Curtin (Perth, Australia) that has been developing over the last two years on the basis of the wider Aberdeen-Curtin Alliance. It also reiterates the international outlook of Geography & Environment at Aberdeen and the department’s commitment to research that is of high relevance to the planet’s and people’s well-being. At the same time, the expertise possessed by the staff in both departments are a perfect platform for students wishing to excel in academia and pursue a PhD in the broad field of sustainability studies. More news on recruitment will follow shortly.
