Dr Piotr Niewiadomski Director of MSc Sustainability Transitions will host a sample lecture.

The emergence of the concept of sustainable development in the 1980s provoked important questions about tourism and its impacts  - particularly its impacts on the natural environment. Although tourism is one of the largest sectors in the world and an important engine for economic growth, it is also one of the largest polluters. It is therefore not clear how possible it is for tourism to become sustainable and what potential tourism has to contribute to wider sustainability transitions.

This lecture addresses these problems with reference to the Isle of Eigg – a community-owned island that decided to pursue sustainability on the basis of inbound tourism. The lecture analyses the impacts of tourism on Eigg and critically reflects on the strategy adopted by the island.
