David Watts (Geography) and Ben Marsden (History) have been awarded a PhD studentship by the Economic and Social Research Council, through the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science. The PhD, which has attracted collaborative funding from the Association of Meat Inspectors Trust, will examine the history of meat inspection in the UK since 1914. The research will be done by Bill Strachan, who joins the University this month. As a former meat inspector, Bill is ideally placed to analyse the history and practice of one of the defining activities of the food industry: deciding what meat is fit to eat.
