Please join us for a research seminar to be given by Dr Philip Heron of Durham University entitled ‘Beyond the crust: the role of the mantle lithosphere in plate tectonic processes’. The seminar will take place on Tuesday, 7th November in Meston MT4. All are welcome to attend.

Abstract:

The mantle lithosphere is often overlooked in plate tectonic theory due to its difficulty to image and uncertainty in rheological makeup. However, lithosphere imaging has shown potential scarring in continental mantle lithosphere to be ubiquitous, which has complicated our knowledge of the interaction between the lithospheric layers over long timescales. Here, I analyse intraplate deformation driven by mantle lithosphere heterogeneities from ancient Wilson Cycle processes and compare this to crustal inheritance deformation in 2D and 3D numerical simulations.
