Please join us on Thursday, 23rd March for a research seminar given by Dr Clare Warren of the Open University on "Linking ages to stages and dates to rates: progress in dating tectonic timescales". All are welcome to attend.

Abstract

The rates and timescales over which plates interact during subduction or collision provides constraints on the mechanisms by which crust is buried, transformed, deformed and recycled.  Precise and accurate measurement of isotope ratios in minerals used as geological clocks is now routine, providing tightly constrained mineral ages.  However our ability to link "age" to "stage", especially in metamorphic rocks that have experienced a lengthy history lags behind the analytical advances.  High spatial resolution in-situ laser ablation datasets commonly yield a range of dates rather than a single “bulk” age, suggesting protracted crystallization over a range of PT conditions, inefficient resetting during cooling and exhumation or analytical mixing of growth zones. The interpretation of the dispersed ages hinges on additional chemical and/or textural data that tie the evolution of the geochronometer mineral to the pressure-temperature-deformation evolution of the rest of the rock.  This seminar will discuss new chemical tools and applications that help constrain how and when time is recorded in deformed rocks during burial and exhumation.
