Please join us on Thursday, 2nd of March for a research seminar presented by Dr. Laura Spina, of  Ludwig Maximilian Universität, Munich, Germany, on “From the Field to the Lab: Insights on the Dynamics of the Shallow Magmatic System”. All are welcome to attend.

Abstract

The shallow plumbing system is much more than the transient pathway for magmatic fluids toward the surface: it represents the theatre of several fundamental processes -such as volatile degassing and crystallization- that have direct impact on the eruptive style at the surface. As such, several studies have been devoted to understand the dynamics operative within the volcanic conduits, yet our knowledge remain jeopardized. We here present the results of two different approaches to the study of volcanic conduits: 1) multi-parametric observation of volcanic processes at the surface and 2) analogue laboratory experiments. First, we will illustrate the ability of a multi-parametric tool to shed lights on the shallow conduit dynamics through the investigation of the multi-vent system active at Mt. Etna in July 2014. Then, moving to the analogue approach, we will quantitatively determine the effect of physical properties and decompression rate on the behaviour of volatile-bearing analogue samples in scaled laboratory experiments.
