Please join us for a research seminar given by Mr Christoffer Weekstrom of Aalto University (Finland) on "DecoNet: Decoding Urban Public Transport Networks".

Presentation Abstract

The presentation will begin by providing a general overview of the DecoNet project, a research project with the aim of using advanced network science for analysing public transport networks. The goals and methods used in the project will be briefly presented. The second part presents the results of the paper on user perspectives of the flexible micro transit service (FMTS) Kutsuplus. The service was operational in Helsinki from 2012 until the end of 2015, and had several advanced features. For example, the ordering and routing systems were fully automated and fares were collected through a prepaid account. The methodological approach was a questionnaire with the additional ability to collect georeferenced data. The results show that Kutsuplus users had a range of socio-economic and travel behaviour features. In addition, the results include detailed analysis of stated trip characteristics. Furthermore, the results include qualitative analysis of respondents’ opinions and recommendations about positive and lacking FMTS features. The paper ends with a summary of positive Kutsuplus features, followed by the discussion of aspects for future deployment, including end-user and service area analysis, marketing strategy, and service usability. The final part of the presentation discusses the next steps to be taken in the study of the Kutsuplus service.
