Undergraduate Degrees

Archaeology is available to study at undergraduate level as:

Our MA and BSc courses can be taken as three-year Designated degrees or four-year Honours degrees, with part time study options available. Our Certificate in Archaeology is a two-year part time programme that can be taken via online learning.

The main difference between the MA and BSc programmes lies in the subsidiary subjects taken along with Archaeology:

  • BSc will be mainly science-based subjects
  • MA students will be expected to take subjects from the humanities and social sciences.

In addition the department offers a number of Joint Honours degrees with subjects such as:

  • Anthropology
  • History
  • Scandinavian Studies
  • Celtic and Anglo-Saxon Studies
  • Archaeology with Chemistry

Taught Postgraduate Degrees

At postgraduate level, the Department of Archaeology at Aberdeen currently supports taught MSc degrees range of subject areas. We offer 1 year taught Masters courses.

These include our flagship MSc in The Archaeology of the North , a postgraduate qualification unique to Aberdeen and drawing on our wide and specialized knowledge of the cultures and prehistory of the north.

In addition we offer a taught 1 year MSc in Archaeology that allows you to approach a diverse range of archaeological topics and drawing on our specific field of expertise. In 2017, we launched a special stream for our MSc Archaeology: Vikings in Focus , and in 2018 launched an MSc in Osteoarchaeology .
