Landscape Archaeology has now become a central focus of archaeological research in the 21stcentury.
Moving beyond more traditional 'site-based' approaches, landscape archaeology considers the ways in which broader environments are both implicated in and shaped by human interactions. Researchers in the Department of Archaeology and associated disciplines employ a range of approaches to interrogate both ancient and more recent landscapes, from GPS-based survey techniques and environmental sampling to place-based engagements with material culture and ethnohistorical data.
Our research ranges from understanding Neolithic seascapes through to the study of landscapes of colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Recent landscape projects have been based in Scotland, Iceland, Greenland and the west Coast of Canada.
