The Archaeology Department (with colleagues from Palaeoecology) at Aberdeen has been rated top in Scotland for its research profile in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) exercise, which has been carried out across the UK University sector.
With over 63% of its research classified as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (4* and 3*), the results published today show the newest Archaeology Department in the UK ranked above long-established counterparts in Scotland such as Edinburgh and Glasgow – and also above a number of well-established Departments in England.
“For a young Department, that’s only been in existence since 2007, this is a tremendous achievement and is testament to the hard work and dedication of all the staff”, said Professor Keith Dobney, Head of Department, earlier today. “It’s clear from these results that Aberdeen is a new centre for excellence in Archaeological Research with particular strengths in Human Palaeoecology and the Archaeology of the North”
