Much academic research is undertaken within university departments and creates knowledge for other academic end users. But the department of archaeology at Aberdeen is attempting to shift this image. Last week at the Scottish Records Association 2014 Conference, Jeff Oliver, of the department of Archaeology, and Colin Miller, of the Bailies of Bennachie (a local community group), presented the initial results of co-produced research involving academics and members of the community. Over sixty professionals and members of the pubic were in attendance at Linlithgow Burgh Halls near Edinburgh to hear them speak about how archaeology and archival research is helping to shed light on the history of the Colony site, a one-time squatter settlement located on the hill of Bennachie, Northeast Scotland’s most iconic landform.
