For hardcore archaeology fans and professional archaeologists alike, popular archaeology TV shows can be a point of conflict - but some make for addictive viewing and guilty pleasure. It's a feeling those of you who have been indulging in Channel 5's recent series 10,000BC may be familiar with.
For readers who aren't familiar with the show, it's a mix of Castaway and TOWIE, with Raquel Welch-esq outfits (circa. One Million Years BC).
Some of you may be surprised to learn that, while entertaining, this isn't the first time people have volunteered to head back into the 'Stone Age' for the camera - Aberdeen's very own Caroline Wickham-Jones participated in Avasjö project in 1982. Initated by Tomas Johansson of the Institutet for Forhistorisk Teknologi, the project in experimental archaeology saw researchers from Sweden and Scotland live the prehistoric hunter-fisher-gatherer lifestyle for one week, setting up camp on the eastern shore of the Lille Avasjö lake.
