Aberdeen's Tom Birch begins postdoctoral research at the Goethe University (Frankfurt) studying coins from the Greco-Roman world.
At the beginning of December Tom started his new job as postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Archaeology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. The two-year position is part of an established project, 'Coinage and the dynamics of power', led by archaeologist and numismatist Prof. Dr. Fleur Kemmers. The research involves chemically analysing a selection of silver and copper coins from across the Western Mediterranean, using their isotopic signature and trace element composition to identify continuity and change in bullion sources from 500-100 BCE. Tom will be drawing a lot on his analytical skills learnt at the University of Aberdeen.
