Carnegie trust grant to enable Aberdeen researcher to investigate the impact of colonialism on the Indigenous cultures of the west coast of Canada.
Dr Jeff Oliver has been awarded a grant from the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland to travel to Canada this summer to undertake a pilot project on the European colonization of Canada’s historic Indigenous cultures. The research will produce a dataset of historic and archaeological information about changing nineteenth- and early twentieth-century settlement and burial structures on the coast of British Columbia. The project will help to answer questions about the variable impact of colonialism on the social institutions of a sample of historic sites. This study is intended form the basis of a larger-scale comparative analysis of colonial period cultural transformations on the coast. Congratulations Jeff!
