Lecturer in Archaeology, Caroline Wickham-Jones, is set to be part of a team exhibiting at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London, from the 3–8 July 2012. The exhibit, led by Dr Richard Bates of the Department of Earth Sciences at St Andrews University, is entitled Europe’s Lost World: Our Drowned Landscapes. It is a joint project between scientists at the Universities of St Andrews, Aberdeen, Dundee, Birmingham, and the University of Wales Trinity St David.
The exhibit draws on geophysical archaeological survey and palaeo-geographical fieldwork undertaken in recent years in the North Sea, Orkney, and Jersey sponsored by NERC, English Heritage, Historic Scotland, The Crown Estates and Aggregate Industries. These have mapped the now submerged palaeo-landscapes known as Doggerland. The exhibit will use the latest 3-D viewing technologies to allow people to visualise the places that our ancestors lived, travelled and hunted.
