MSc Planetary Sciences
Why did you choose this degree programme at the University of Aberdeen?
My undergraduate degree was in Astronomy and Planetary Science, and my goal was always to continue my education through a Master's degree (with a view to pursue a PhD). When the MSc Planetary Sciences course opened in Aberdeen, it was very exciting as Aberdeen is my hometown, and historically has had no such subject available at undergraduate or, indeed, at master's level at either of its universities.
What skills, knowledge or experience did you gain or develop on this degree programme?
This course allows students the opportunity to pursue their own research interests, with ample opportunity for support from the excellent planetary sciences research team. Not only do I feel that the course provides the basis for becoming a more well-rounded scientist, it has also provided me with the confidence necessary to approach research topics that I have little prior experience with. Research aside, this programme has improved my scientific writing and presentation skills, both of which are an absolute necessity in a career as a scientist.
Tell us about your career since graduating.
Since graduating, I have secured a position at Okayama University in Japan, and am currently working on my PhD. My project interests include stellar/planetary evolution and coupled ocean/atmosphere systems in the context of the origin of life on Earth.
What advice would you give another student who is considering applying to this programme?
I would recommend this course to any student whose interests lie in the study of space and planetary systems. Planetary science is very interdisciplinary, and therefore has a place for someone with a background in just about any scientific discipline. The broad variety of topics that are taught during this course will encourage you to deepen your knowledge of a specific topic of your choosing, while simultaneously inviting you to pursue new and exciting areas in planetary science. If you like the idea of being given the freedom to research your own interests, while being taught (and encouraged) by a team of superb scientists, this course is for you.
