Nonlinear normal vibration modes of a semi-infinite slender beam on elastic foundation with unilateral contact are addressed using the method of multiple scales.
Nonlinear normal vibration modes of a semi-infinite slender beam on elastic foundation with unilateral contact are addressed using the method of multiple scales. This introductory problem is related to the free vibrations of catenary offshore risers subjected to initial kinematic disturbancies. The original moving-boundary problem due to a varying touchdown-point positioning is converted into a fixed-boundary one, by virtue of a variable transformation, which also renders the normal modes in the form of a stationary wave in place of the typically travelling wave of the physical problem.
