Extracting Romanticism: Dr. Stephanie O'Rourke (University of St. Andrews)
This talk explores how European romanticism addressed the emergence of a new and essentially extractive way of treating and conceptualizing the natural world. We generally understand romanticism as a movement that pursued spiritual and emotional communion with the natural world. But the world itself was changing rapidly. Focusing on German landscapes and ore mining, I argue that romanticism was, in some regards, a product of extraction.
Dr Stephanie O'Rourke is a Senior Lecturer in Art History at the University of St Andrews, where she specialises in European visual culture of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
