Derick Thomson (1921-2012) contributed to the preservation and development of Gaelic in Scotland as a poet, scholar, editor, journalist, and activist. As well as founding and steering the most important modern Gaelic magazine, Gairm, he instigated a number of ventures aimed at promoting Gaelic and had major impact on Gaelic studies as an academic subject. His vision of the Gaelic revival is characterised by high aesthetic standards, organisational and economic shrewdness, openness to second-language users, support for Scottish political independence and a broad European outlook.

Bha Ruaraidh MacThòmais (1921-2012) ’n sàs gu mòr ann an ath-bheòthachadh na Gàidhlig ann an Alba mar bhàrd, ollamh, neach-naidheachd, agus iomairtiche. Chuir e air bhonn Gairm, iris a bu cudromaiche a nochd anns an dàrna leth den fhicheadamh linn, agus iomadh iomairt eile a bha a’ brosnachadh na Gàidhlig. Bha buaidh mhòr aige air Gàidhlig mar chuspair anns na h-oilthighean agus bha e fàilteach do luchd na Gàidhlig aig nach robh an cànan bho thùs. Ann an ath-bheòthachadh na Gàidhlig, bha MacThòmais ag iarraidh stannardan àrda agus stiùireadh comasach, taic do neo-eisimeileachd na h-Alba, agus ceanglaichean làidir ri Roinn na h-Eòrpa.’

Michelle MacLeod, Derrick J. McClure, and Petra Johana Poncarová will discuss Thomson's life and work and introduce the new monograph dedicated to him, Derick Thomson and the Gaelic Revival (2024).
