Join Chai Jie Low (Melbourne Conservatorium of Music) to explore piano variations of the Belaieff Circle.
Abstract: The Belaïeff Circle was an influential artistic circle in St Petersburg during the late-nineteenth to early-twentieth century, named after the musical patron Mitrofan Petrovich Belaïeff, who championed the advancement of Russian music. Its members wrote many solo piano works that are unbeknownst to musicians today, having been overlooked over the course of history. This lecture-recital aims to explore the use of variation techniques and a practice-led research approach to selected piano variations by composers of the Belaïeff Circle, as well as to promote recognition of the Circle and its contributions to fin-de-siècle Russia and beyond.
Chai Jie Low is an Australian pianist, PhD candidate and Teaching Associate at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed in Australia, Europe, USA and the UK. Chai Jie was a Residential Tutor at St Mary’s College at the University of Melbourne in 2019 – 2022, and completed postgraduate study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London as a recipient of the Mary Elizabeth McComas Piano Scholarship. A multifaceted performer-scholar, Chai Jie is current a member of the editorial committee for Context: Journal of Music Research, an international peer-reviewed journal publishing original research into a broad range of music-related fields. Her research explores nineteenth-century Russian piano works of the Belaïeff Circle, supported by an Australian Research Training Scholarship and Melbourne Research Scholarship.
