Dr Guillaume Ferreira: Neurocognitive impact of early-onset obesity in animal models: circuit-specific memory deficits and gender differences
Guillaume completed his PhD at the University of Tours (France, 2000) on brain circuits underlying social recognition memory in sheep. After a postdoctoral position at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), he came back to the University of Tours and then moved to Bordeaux in 2009. Since 2016 he is research director in the NutriNeuro department where he is now co-leading the FoodCircus team (Mechanisms of neural circuit sensitivity to altered nutritional status) investigating the causal mechanistic links between nutrients states and behavioral phenotypes linked to neurological or psychiatric disorders.

Summary: The talk will first stress that adolescence is a vulnerable period to the adverse effects of obesogenic diet on memory, particularly hippocampal-dependent memory. We will then discuss in animal models the importance of altered neuronal activity in such diet-induced memory impairments and how normalising activity through chemogenetic or neuromodulatory system manipulation can rescue these deficits. Finally, we will show evidence that the sex strongly influences brain structures and cell types involved in such diet-induced memory disorders.
