J W Goethe - The Scientist
One of the key figures who emerged during the Romantic era in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, was the German writer and polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. While Goethe was not strictly a Romantic scientist, his ideas and approach to science do share some commonalities with the Romantic movement and continue to be relevant and influential today. While renowned as a literary figure, Goethe claimed that his greatest contribution to the world was his scientific treatise on optics and colours. He also developed the field of morphology in biology and was an influence on prominent scientists such as Alexander von Humboldt and Charles Darwin. This presentation will focus on Goethe’s contribution to science, his method and any relevance it may have for contemporary issues and education.
