Professor Sabine Hyland will speak on Khipu. If you're not sure what that means, don't Google(tm) come to the talk and your appreciation of human inventiveness will raised to new heights! Or... you can read the abstract.
Although the knotted cords texts known as "khipus" have been used in the Andes for over a millennium (c 950 AD - 1950AD), their history and symbolism remain little understood. This presentation analyses a hitherto unknown ritual manuscript, the Entablo, from the village of Casta, Peru, where a type of khipu known as a "khipu board" was used until the 1950s. This study reveals new insights into the social and symbolic nature of khipus, particularly with reference to gender, place, and knowledge.
