Please join us for a Geosciences research seminar on ‘Observation, Imaging and Interpretation in Ambient Noise Seismology’, presented by Dr Sjoerd de Ridder of the University of Edinburgh. The seminar will take place at 1PM in Meston Lecture Theatre 2. All are welcome to attend.
Seminar Abstract:
Microseism noise is excited by interfering ocean swells exerting pressure variations on the sea floor. In marine recordings, this noise is composed primarily of interface waves travelling along the sea floor. I study which properties of the near-surface lithology below the sea floor can be imaged using this microseism noise. By crosscorrelating recordings made by ocean-bottom cables at Valhall and Ekofisk fields I create virtual seismic sources dominates by Love and Scholte interface waves. But since the recordings of the seismic wavefield are made very densely in space, we can observe the entire wave field of surface waves propagating along the sea floor. I measure the spatial gradients of the wave field and compare them with the temporal gradients of the wave field (a method also named wavefield gradiometry) to measure the wave velocity in the vincinity of the stations by inverting the wave equation directly.
