German Reading Group, Autumn 2017

German Reading Group, Autumn 2017
-

This is a past event

The German Reading Group will run again this semester, taking place on Monday afternoons from 1.15pm to 2.45pm, in KCS9, commencing Monday 18th September.

The purpose of the group is to allow those with a good basic grounding in German grammar and vocabulary to develop their ability in reading German. Each session will usually involve a grammar revision session and then a collaborative translation of a pre-prepared text. There is no assessment or credit involved, and the atmosphere is relaxed, co-operative, and friendly.

This group is not designed for beginners - there are good courses available online or in texts or in the German department here to facilitate the acquisition of basic German grammar and vocabulary. But this group is also not designed for experts - if you are already fluent, you may not find the class a good use of time … though you are welcome to come along anyway.

Our first venture will be from a recent work of intellectual biography on the person of Karl Barth (please email paul.nimmo@abdn.ac.uk for the text). We will seek to work through these paragraphs in our first session. This means that if you plan to attend, you should have a go at preparing a translation of this material in advance, using whatever dictionaries and grammars you need. That is all - we work through the text slowly and carefully in class and address any areas of concern and confusion.

Going forward, there will be the possibility of working on translations of material which members of the Group wish to translate as part of their research.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail Professor Paul Nimmo.
