Our guest speaker will be Professor Hanna Liss, Hochschule fuer Juedische Studien in Heidelberg. She will give a paper on "Scholarly Knowledge, Drollery or Esotericism? The Masorah of the Hebrew Bible in Medieval Western Europe as an Exegetical Tool". In religious literary works, in particular in the first Hebrew Bible codices, Jewish scholars commented on particularities in the text in marginal notes to prevent deviations when the work was being copied. By the Middle Ages, these notes had developed into embellishments and illustrations made up of minuscule letters. Only recently have researchers begun to scrutinize the content and purpose of these illustrations. The paper introduces the audience to this fascinating aspect of the world of Medieval Jewish scholarship.
