An internationally renowned researcher from the University of Aberdeen has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards, which celebrates the impact of academic and business partnerships.
Professor Marian Wiercigroch from the University’s School of Engineering is nominated in the Knowledge Exchange Champion of the Year category, in recognition of exceptional engagement with industry and delivery of knowledge exchange to energy companies, through Aberdeen’s Centre for Applied Dynamics Research, which he established in 2003.
The Centre has been working in partnership with the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and energy companies to develop new technologies for the oil and gas sector.
OGIC is supporting projects worth more than £1.3 million where the University’s Centre for Applied Dynamics Research (CADR) team is developing, or has developed, technologies for use in offshore drilling operations.
OGIC has provided £640,000 in co-funding for seven projects, where the CADR team have partnered with five companies to develop innovations including an automated programme for testing well integrity and a new drill-bit.
The team’s efforts were recognised earlier this year with the University’s Award for Success in Engagement with Industry, which recognises innovative research, a significant breakthrough or a major contribution to a team’s field.
Commenting on his nomination in the Scottish Knowledge Exchange Awards, Professor Wiercigroch said:
“I am delighted to be shortlisted but this is very much a team effort with colleagues from the Centre for Applied Dynamics Research - in particular, Dr Vahid Vaziri and Dr Marcin Kapitaniak.”
Dr Siobhán Jordan, Director of Interface, the knowledge connection hub which runs the Awards, added:
“We are thrilled at the variety and breadth of the collaborative projects and individual knowledge exchange pioneers who have been nominated for awards. The applications demonstrate that business-academic partnerships are thriving and having a positive impact on individuals, communities and industries in tackling social and economic challenges throughout Scotland and beyond.”
