Professor Gorry Fairhurst lead a key standards workshop on the Higher Layers (Satellite) in the historic city of Bologna
The workshop was hosted for the Return Channel Satellite working group of the Digital Video Broadcast Technical Module (DVB-RCS). This meeting, on 10th-12th May 2010, marked the half-way point of what has become the largest broadband satellite standards initiative in the world, bringing key international players to the standards process from Europe, Canada, USA, Israel, and Korea.
When the new specification is published in 2011, it is expected to be a key enabler to providing Universal Coverage of digital services, realising the potential to deliver high-speed Internet access throughout Europe. A Euroconsult Report commissioned by the European Space Agency in 2007 estimated that 400,000 DVB-RCS terminals will already be in use by 2015.
