Dr Mark Stewart, Dr Amin Sharifi, and Dr Dominic Van Der A from the School of Engineering Outreach Team recently delivered a two-day workshop to S1 pupils at Fraserburgh Academy.
Dr Mark Stewart began with a talk entitled “What is Engineering”, which culminated in the first activity where the pupils were asked to work in small groups to produce a poster showing a “map of engineering” for Fraserburgh.
This was followed by another activity which involved the students working in groups to design and build a balloon-powered race car. At the end of the workshop the pupils had the chance to race their cars against one another – with varied levels of success!
The workshop was designed to assist with the delivery of Fraserburgh Academy’s newly developed STEM strategy and is part of the School of Engineering’s strategy aimed at promoting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education in Scotland and promoting engineering careers to more students from different socio-economic backgrounds.
